International Women’s Day: Celebrating The Brave Women of Iran and Afghanistan.

On March 8, 1979, Iranian women’s celebrations of International Women’s Day turned into protests against a new decree by Khomeini about mandatory veiling. (Hengameh Golestan)

On International Women's Day, let's remember the bravery of women in Iran and Afghanistan

Despite facing horrific systematic human rights abuses, Iranian and Afghan women remain true inspirations and symbols of resilience

In Iran, the Islamic Republic has severely restricted women's rights since 1979 with discriminatory laws and policies. The Islamic Republic arrests, tortures, and sexually abuse thousands of women who have challenged its countless crimes against humanity.

Despite decades of oppression, brave Iranian women remain at the forefront of the "woman, life, freedom" revolution echoed worldwide.

Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban has stripped Afghan women from sustaining their livelihoods as human beings. The Taliban has banned girls from secondary education and women from employment in most jobs, imposed women's access to health care, and enforced harsh restrictions on women's dress code.

Despite these human rights violations, courageous Afghan women have continuously risked their safety to fight for their rights and freedoms

With the historical momentum of "Woman, Life, Freedom," let's continue empowering and supporting all brave women in pursuing justice and equality for all
